Some easy tips and tricks for a healthy & sustainable diet
Don’t focus on how much you eat, focus on what you eat
Eat as much from the earth and as little from a packet as you can
Order a weekly box of fruit and veg so you always have your fridge and kitchen stocked with healthy items
Store fruit and veg in airtight containers – it stays fresh for so much longer and decreases food waste astronomically
Learn about the “Clean 15” and “Dirty Dozen” to help you avoid chemicals and pesticides
Go to a Farmers Market on the weekend and stock up on spray free produce direct from the farmer - it's cheaper, fresher and generally not wrapped in plastic!
Eat less meat and dairy (these industries are sustainability nightmares and having the occasional meat/dairy free day is great for your body and the planet)
Be prepared!! Stock up on healthy snacks like nuts and take these everywhere
If you forgot to be prepared, don’t wait till your hungry to go shopping for lunch – you’re most likely to grab the fastest and easiest option which probably won’t be all that nutritious
Take a bag of fruit to work on a Monday and have a fruit bowl on your desk so you don't have to remember every day
Tempted by something you think might be an unhealthy food item? Take a breath and moment to think about whether you really want to eat it or buy it
Learn where/what healthy options are near your workplace – take a stroll when you have a free afternoon and explore nearby places you haven’t been that could be your healthy food saviour
Have packaged free days where you don’t eat any food out of a package
Start a small compost at home – if you don’t have a garden, your local community garden or school food garden might love your food scraps
Opt for loose fruit and veg and use paper bags – i.e. don’t buy a pre-packed 1kg bag of carrots
Utilise all those “green bags” you have lying around! Keep them in the car or your handbag so you can say “NO” to plastic bags
Don’t bother peeling veg like carrots or potatoes – just eat it
Take your own water bottle everywhere
Utilise a reusable coffee cup – one use coffee cups cannot be recycled and end up in landfill & these things are EVERYWHERE!
Say no to straws – seriously! Enough plastic straws are produced annually to fill over 46,000 full sized buses
Carry cutlery in your handbag or brief case so you don’t use plastic knives or forks when grabbing something on the run
Do your research and become informed (I’m talking scientific evidence here) ⇢ Learn about what sodium, saturated/trans fats and sugar can do to your health
Read food labels and take note of what is in your food!
There is a lot more you can do but these are a few easily strategies and most don’t require too much effort. Give them a go – trust me, you’ll feel good about yourself. ♡
